Hola!

How is your Thursday treating you?  Well, I hope.

I’m chugging right along with this rest week and I gotta tell you, I’ve cried some.  Not tears from the rest or not being able to work out, but I think more so because exercise is such a mental release for me.  I get in there, sweat a lot, and I feel SO much better afterwards – nary a care in the world.  But since I haven’t had that release through exercise, my body has decided to release through tears.

Poor Travis.

He bears the brunt of my craziness (with no complaints!).  God love him.  I love him!

I needed this week, guys. I needed to let go, to surrender.

I plan on crossing the finish line with new perspective.  It really has been similar to my racing mentality – highs and lows, questioning WHY, tears.  And this is only a 5 day experience.  I’m in awe of some of you ladies who said you took MONTHS off from exercising.  Kudos.

At the finish line of my last race.

Unlike a race where at the finish line, you get to lay down in the grass and vow to never move again, my “finish line” will include a Bootcamp tomorrow morning.  After a week off, it might just kill me. I can’t flippin’ wait!  I’ll have a final update tomorrow with my thoughts on this little experiment.

If my little 5 days has got you thinking about taking your OWN rest week, DO IT!  Start now.  Don’t put it off.  Your body will FLOURISH with the rest!  I know that mine has!

So there’s the body update.  Let’s move to Tuesday Trainer.

I’ve missed this little workout friend.  And I think some of you guys have too!  My blend, Dana does many of the TT workouts and loves them.

This makes me smile.  (I do that plyo workout often actually.)

The theme for this week’s Tuesday Trainer is PROGRESSIONS.

The deal:  You pick an exercise, then show us the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of it.  If you want to include more than three variations, that’s cool too.  I think this will be a great way to cater to ALL fitness levels and it should take away some of the fear for beginners.

Here’s my progression: Jumping Jacks

Some tips for TT newbies:

  • Tell us who you are! If you blog, tell us the URL!
  • Do the exercises correctly! I can’t post videos with improper form or sketchy descriptions.
  • Be yourself – let that personality shine through!
  • Anyone can participate. Man, woman, blogger, non-blogger, sheep.  Anyone.

Video submissions are due next Monday, the 3rd, at 8pm, EST! Please have them to me before the deadline! Go here to learn how to upload your video.

QUESTION:  How long have you been exercising?  <-ME?  I started really focusing on my fitness my Senior year of high school.  Didn’t get into strength training until I met Travis in 2002.

  1. I am new to your site, but am totally going to be partaking in this! I love that the theme is PROGRESSIONS this week, I have the best one: the handstand push up! :) I will get it to you by tomorrow night!

  2. I’m sorry I’m replying to this so late, love :( I hope your bootcamp ROCKED yesterday hunnie! I loved the pic of you on IG! You had the best smile on your face :) You looked like you were in YOUR element. I am proud of you for taking this rest day, though! What a huge success! I just needed to feature you in yesterday’s high five friday and I am sure you inspired so many people to do the same! I am on a road trip right now – a 28 hour road trip (not counting stops), so Saturday and Sunday will both definitely be rest days, but Monday might be too!? We’re not sure when we will be getting into London. Just going with the flow :)

I really wanted to participate in this week’s TT, but I think it will have to wait until next week! Sorry love :( I’m so excited to participate next week! It’s been one of those things “I’ve always wanted to do”

    Love you girl!

  5. Just reading your blog & laughing out loud and BOOM! There’s MY name and IG photo on YOUR blog!!! What an honor! You made my day! Thanks for that, and for the laughs this morning!:) now off to tabata with you, again….

  6. Excited to read your thoughts on your little stint.. I am sure you learned a lot of things inside and out. And I am SO IN for this TT! Will film Saturday. I am thinking push-ups… so I hope nobody does those!

  7. I bet this was such a mental release but also mental test for you this week. It would be for me too. Whereas taking 5 days off on a vacation feels more normal, doing it when you are in your normal routine is SO MUCH HARDER! Kudos for doing this and proving its worth and releasing!!

  8. I’m so happy you are having success with this resting period. And crying is good for the soul, sometimes exercise is simply added stress on our bodies, even if it does relief that initial tension and anxious feelings. Since exercise does add stress to our bodies. When we cry and really let our emotions out in that way is such a freeing feeling! Oh progressions will be a fun TT :)

  9. Crying can be such a release, right?! Shane doesn’t get it – you’re lucky Travis does :)
Love your progressions – totally adding an explosive jack in tomorrow’s boot camp class ;) I’ll have my video to you by tomorrow!! Already thinking about my exercise.

  10. I started working out about 5 months ago. I’m determined to make a lifestyle change and motivate my friends and family by leading by example. I love reading your blog.

  11. Thank you for sharing how your week of rest is going. I’m definitely considering it myself. I have been exercising off and on since my senior year in college. But I have really made an effort to be consistent the past two years and I see the difference physically and emotionally. I need those endorphins!

  12. Good husbands can be very good shoulders. :) I guess I started exercising at age 4 when I started playing soccer. Even though I quit playing after high school, I never quit working out. I first hit the weights in 8th grade and got serious about it junior year of h.s. (as soon as I could drive myself to the gym!)

  13. Your break from exercise reminds me of couples who abstain from kissing the month before marriage. It may just be the most simplistically difficult thing they’ve encountered as a couple thus far, but it will make their bond stronger and the kiss they share on that day will be just THAT much more special.
Perhaps a bit of an extreme example (haha!), but I think that you will have a WHOLE new mentality about your workouts after today is through and you hit Boot camp in the morning. :)

  14. can’t wait to hear your final thoughts! agreed i give a crazy amount of credit to people who take months off – although taking a break is a mental challenge i think more than physical especially when you’re used to doing it so much – get it girl! travis understands :)

  15. Exercise is totally an emotional release for me too! I think I’d be super grouchy from a week off but just imagine what you’ll feel like that first workout back! You’re going to kill it!

  16. Hi Lindsay. Great job this week! You are inspiring many with this!
I was wondering if you have a post somewhere (that I may have missed) about being a mom of two little ones and being able to fit in your workouts. I have a two year old daughter and am soon to have a newborn (due date end of Oct!) so I would love all the advice I can get about fitting in workouts along with being busy with two children. Let me know :)

    1. Leah! First thanks for reading – love new readers.
It can be super hard with two – my biggest piece of advice would be to invest in a good double jogging stroller! I have the Instep Safari and it has saved my life! When your newest one is still quite small, you’ll need just a single stroller for the two year old and to WEAR the newborn for walks. But then you can upgrade to the double – you can find used ones for a reasonable price.
I also wrote a piece on working out with your infant for Mom365 – check it out for more tips – http://www.mom365.com/Baby/Posts/2012/Aug/Summer-of-Strong-Monday-Workout-Working-Out-with-Your-Baby.aspx
